What Is Edge Banding and Where Is It Used?

Edge banding is when exposed edges of wooden boards are covered with thin strips of material using adhesives.

Edge banding is frequently used in the furniture industry to create smooth, aesthetically-pleasing, durable and safe wooden surfaces. It achieves this by structurally reinforcing edges, protecting them from wear, scrapes and environmental factors such as moisture, and covering up sharp edges that could pose safety risks.

Wooden surfaces are commonly made more visually appealing through edge banding with a matching piece of wood. When applied with an appropriate adhesive, this can make the entire piece of wood look seamlessly rounded at the edges, raising the quality of the product.

Materials used for edge banding range from wood veneer, PVC, ABS, polypropylene or other resin.

The global edge banding market is estimated to reach a value of £1.4 billion by 2027, growing at a rate of 9.6%. This growth can be accounted for by rising demand for user-friendly, environmentally sustainable and more durable residential and commercial equipment. As a result, more innovative edge banding solutions are being explored by manufacturers to gain a competitive edge in this growing market.

Below, we explore our recommended adhesives for edge banding applications:

Araldite 2011

Araldite 2011 is a multi-purpose epoxy adhesive from Huntsman that can bond wood effectively. It is our recommended product for edge banding applications. It provides high shear and peel strength with excellent resistance to dynamic loading, cures in temperatures from 20°C to 180°C and has a long working life of 12 months. In addition to being compatible with industrial processes, it is available in neutral and pale yellow pastes, providing extra compatibility with certain wood grains and types.

Araldite 2012

Araldite 2012 is a multi-purpose epoxy adhesive that can also be used to provide reliable bonds to various wood types. Similarly, we recommend this product for edge banding applications. It is a tough and resilient adhesive that offers fast curing, low shrinkage and compatibility with a variety of materials. This allows manufacturers to achieve more efficient production through reduced cure time. Araldite 2012 is available in opaque and pale yellow pastes, giving options for different edge banding applications.
