Manufacturing Ovens & Microwaves
Industry experts predict the global oven and microwave market to be worth over $25.4 billion in 2021. This is an industry in growth, with much of the growth being accounted for by increasing innovations in convection ovens, grill ovens and solo microwave ovens.
With the help of adhesives and sealants for ovens and microwaves, these advancements are allowing manufacturers to increase output rate, reduce production costs and produce higher quality products.
The typical manufacturing process of a microwave oven can be broken down as follows:
Oven Cavity & Door
The process usually starts with the manufacturing of the oven cavity and door. The frame is formed from sheets of metal, using metal-forming processes. The door is also formed and painted, and a metal plate is attached to its window aperture. This is to reflect heat and microwaves while allowing light to pass through. Adhesives and sealants are used in this stage to bond the window to the door frame.
The cavity is attached to the main chassis, and the door is attached to the cavity using hinges. The magnetron tube, responsible for creating microwaves, is also attached to the side of the cavity. All electronic circuitries responsible for producing and handling the voltages throughout the oven are attached alongside the magnetron tube.
Fan, switches and front panel
A fan, alongside a stirrer shield to protect it, are attached to the top of the cavity in order to circulate the microwaves. All control and safety switches are installed near the door. Finally, a front panel is installed allowing full operation of the oven by the user.
Adhesives and Sealants for Ovens and Microwaves
The main adhesive applications within ovens and microwaves are for bonding the outer and inner window to the frame. Adhesives offer many unique advantages over mechanical fastening methods. DOWSIL silicone adhesives and sealants provide ideal solutions for manufacturing ovens and microwaves due to being:
- Heat resistant up to 250°C
- Great adhesives for bonding glass
- Great adhesives for bonding painted metal
- Environmentally friendly and sustainable
- Flame-retardant and of low flammability
Here we explore our recommended range of adhesives for ovens and microwaves:
DOWSIL™ 3-6096 is a one-component adhesive that can be used to bond oven and microwave doors and cooking hobs. It is strong, flexible and stable from -40°C to +250°C, provides a fast cure, and cures to a tough, flexible rubber. This product provides excellent bonds to substrates with dissimilar thermal expansion.
DOWSIL 732 is a multi-purpose sealant that can be used for sealing microwave doors. It is available in white, black, clear and aluminium; allowing use in different varieties of ovens and microwaves. It is stable and flexible from -60°C to +205°C, easy to apply and cures to a tough, flexible rubber.
DOWSIL 736 is a heat-resistant sealant that can withstand temperatures as high as 315°C; making it useful for sealing oven doors. It may be applied overhead or on sidewalls, and it will not sag.
DOWSIL EA-2626 is a two-component adhesive & sealant, made up of a DOWSIL™ EA-2626 base and SILASTIC™ Q3-3636 catalyst, that can be used in applications up to 190°C. It offers a fast cure in-depth, as opposed to outside inward like most moisture-cure adhesives. This product has been specially developed to provide adhesive sealing for components that exhibit different thermal expansion rates.
