Case Study: Micro Welding of Pipes With Molykote

The client for this project was a business involved in the maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) of the mining industry, whose work depended on rock-drilling machines.
The rock-drilling machines used by the client drilled over 20 tons of rock. These machines required lubrication in order to prevent seizures in the threaded connections of the pipes. The pipes are subject to high loads in a moist and dusty environment, of temperatures exceeding 200°C and a speed of 1000 RPM.
Originally, the client was using a zinc-based thread compound, applied over the threaded connection, before the pipes were assembled and the drilling began. However, the client noticed wear and tear of the threaded connections, leading to the micro-welding of pipes. The lubricant used was not able to provide the correct protection to the threaded connections. The zinc-based thread compound was unable to provide the correct torque when disassembled.
The client contacted Molykote representatives about this problem, who suggested Molykote G-N Plus Solid Lubricant Paste as a solution.
