Composite bonding adhesives for lightweight vehicle construction

To meet government legislation on carbon emissions, OEM’s are increasingly selecting composite materials for lightweight vehicle construction and to reduce vehicle emissions.

Structural adhesives have been proven to be the best bonding method for composites where they enable composites to be bonded to coated metals, whilst maintaining the integrity of the fibre composite part.

Composite Bonding AdhesivesThe award winning BETAFORCE™ structural adhesives range has been designed to bond lightweight multi-materials, reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel economy.

Winner of the 2018 R&D 100 Award, BETAFORCE™ adhesives are used in the production of the BMW i3 electric car, Audi A8, Aston Martin DB11 and Lamborghini Huracan.

These high performing adhesives; BETAFORCE™ 2850 and BETAFORCE™ 9050 offers superior adhesion to a variety of substrates including Carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) and coated metal surfaces such as steel, aluminium and sheet moulding compounds (SMC), providing greater design flexibility. Applications range from bonding vehicle roofs, CFRP/SMC sandwich design, tailgate modules or steel (e-coated)/CFRP bonding for door modules.

BETAFORCE™ COMPOSITE BONDING ADHESIVESBETAFORCE™ combines high mechanical strength, high modulus and high elongation all in one system. The advantages include increased stiffness and a greater level of energy absorption and flexibility to manage differences in thermal expansion between materials.

The adhesive provides a continuous bond line and cohesive joining of surfaces that improves stability and retains the structural integrity of the substrates, offering higher durability and extending the vehicle life span.

BETAFORCE ADHESIVESHeat accelerated curing technologies can be applied to enable fast handling strength. This means bonded parts can be transferred quickly to the next stage of the assembly line, reducing processing times. The range also offers a cycle time of around one minute, making the adhesives ideal for mass car production.

The open time can be adjusted to suit the application. The long open time can be used to bond large parts.
The adhesives require little to no pre-treatment on composites and coated materials, helping to simplify processes and reduce costs.
