Food Grade Lubricants for ISO 21469

What is the ISO 21469 Certification?

ISO 21469 is the highest product certification that a food-grade lubricant manufacturer can obtain. The certification follows the NSF H1 certification, the standard indication of food-safe lubricants, which ensures that incidental contact with food products is safe.

ISO 21469 takes this standard to a higher level, providing assurance that the whole process of lubricant design, manufacturing, packaging and transportation is to the highest health & safety standards.

This includes an assessment of the chemical safety of the lubricant (toxicity, mutagenicity), the potential for biological risks (pathogens, carcinogenicity), the potential for the ingression of dirt, dust or metal particles, compatibility with other lubricants, and the potential for hazards and spoilage within storage and transportation.

ISO 21469 is a voluntary standard, which means that it’s not required by food & drink manufacturers, unlike the NSF certifications, but is obtained by manufacturers that want to provide an extra level of quality, safety & confidence with their products.

How Manufacturers Can Achieve ISO 21469

Food & drink manufacturers can achieve ISO 21469 by going through the following certification process:

  • Product formulation review: all constituents of the lubricant are checked against NSF & FDA food-safe ingredients.
  • Manufacturing risk assessment: thorough risk assessments are carried out to identify and rectify all hazards within the manufacturing process of the lubricant.
  • Production facility audit: the production facility of the lubricant is audited to ensure good manufacturing processes and hygiene practices.
  • Testing: product samples are tested annually to ensure the requirements of ISO 21469 are kept consistently up-to-date.

By obtaining this certification, all stakeholders of the food-grade lubricants are benefited from its increased safety confidence.

JAX Food Grade Lubricants Guide for ISO 21469

ISO 21469-certified lubricants are greatly beneficial in food processing plants as they:

  • Reduce friction and wear on processing machinery – improving efficiencies and reducing the frequency of maintenance, saving costs.
  • Increase equipment lifetime – reducing the need for repairs or replacements.
  • Improve equipment safety – reducing health & safety hazards, ensuring safe operability of machinery.
  • Protect against corrosion, water and chemicals – reducing inefficiencies and the likelihood of equipment damage.
  • Provide full safety for storage, freezing and vacuum packing.
  • Ensure functionality while eliminating food & food waste contamination.
  • Ensure functionality without contributing to food allergens.
  • Improving general hygiene in the workspace.

Here we explore our food-grade lubrication guide for ISO 21469 from our brand JAX for food processing plants.

JAX Flow-Guard ISO 22, 32, 46, 68, 100 are synthetic, 100% PAO food-grade hydraulic oils that offer superior performance in severe applications at both high and low temperatures.

JAX FGH-AW ISO 32, 46, 68 and 100 are hydraulic oils for all equipment working with pressures below 2000 PSI in areas with possible accidental contact with food.

JAX Pyro-Flow FG 46 is a food-grade fire-resistant synthetic oil for applications such as hydraulic oil.

Oils for chains and conveyor belts

JAX Proofer Chain Oil is a food-grade chain oil with superior anti-corrosion quality and excellent load-carrying capacities for applications such as chains.

JAX Magna-Plate 78 is mineral oil with Micronox with excellent protection against wear and corrosion, medium ISO 32 or mild with high load capacity. It’s suitable for most chain applications and can sealing machines.

JAX Magna-Plate 86 is an oil for chains that works at extremely low temperatures. It’s suitable for all types of tunnel freezers with blown air up to –65°C.

JAX Pyro-Kote FG Series are synthetic ester-based lubricants specifically for cleaning and providing deposit-free lubrication in high-temperature oven chain applications.

Jax Trolley-Glide FG-3H is a lubricant that can be used on chains, carts and conveyor belts with direct contact with food (NSF H3). It provides metal wetting, rust protection and non-drip characteristics.

Oils for compressors and vacuum pumps

Compresyn 250 I. is a semi-synthetic lubricant is semi-synthetic oil for compressors and vacuum pumps.

Compresyn 545 I. is a 100% synthetic lubricant is a 100% synthetic oil for compressors and vacuum pumps.

Oils for bearings

JAX Halo Guard FG-2 is a grease with Micronox with high mechanical capacity, excellent resistance to water and great thermal stability. It can be used for all manually lubricated bearings in incidental food contact areas. It provides great anti-corrosion properties and resistance to washing.

JAX Pyro-Plate FGN-2 are synthetic versions of the Halo-Guard range with high load capacity, wide temperature range and very high resistance to water.

JAX Magna-Plate 22 is a grease for incidental contact with food that works in extremely low temperatures -70°C, lubricating bearings and protecting refrigeration and freezing equipment. It provides excellent protection against wear and oxidation.

JAX Poly-Guard FG2: The ultimate in food machinery lubrication where high temperatures coupled with high speeds and bearing loads have caused premature wear of lubricated parts. Provides a high level of anti-wear performance.

Speciality oils
