Frequently Asked Questions about Permabond POP Primer

Permabond POP is a primer and adhesion promoter for Cyanoacrylate Adhesives. It is not an accelerator, so it will not increase the cure rates or change the pH of acidic surfaces. However, it will improve the adhesion for bonding plastics. Here are the most frequently asked questions about Permabond Pop.

Permabond POP

Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) was developed for the surface treatment of polyolefins and silicones before bonding with cyanoacrylate adhesives.

Plastics such as PTFE, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and silicones have low surface energy, which can make it be difficult to bond them without prior surface treatment. However, after using Permabond POP, strong durable bonds can be achieved.

Permabond POP can be used as alternative to pre-treatments such as flame or plasma treatment.

The primer is fluorescent for easy detection under UV light (375 nm) and recommended only for polyolefin and silicone substrates that are used with cyanoacrylate adhesives. POP is not meant to be used with epoxies, UV adhesives or acrylic adhesives.

How do you use Permabond POP?

  1. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free of grease before application.
  2. Apply the Permabond POP to the low energy surface by wiping with a clean cloth or brush, dipping or spraying.
  3. Components must be left to dry at room temperature before bonding with cyanoacrylate adhesives.
  4. When bonding polyolefins with cyanoacrylate adhesive, this can be performed up to 2 hours after POP treatment. This may be lower depending on the combination of polyolefin. For PTFE, immediate bonding is recommended.
  5. The handling time and the curing speed will depend on the substrate and the selected adhesive. The handling time is the time from when the joint is assembled until the moment when it has developed enough resistance to be manipulated.
  6. For maximum bond strength, the adhesive should be allowed to cure for 24 hours at 23 ° C

Do not mix Permabond POP directly with cyanoacrylate adhesives. It is important to remember that all materials should be handled according to good industrial hygiene and stored appropriately at the optimum temperature of 5 to 25°C.

Permabond POPWhat does Permabond POP do?

Permabond POP can improve and increase the bonding strength of cyanoacrylate bonds in polyolefins (polypropylene, polyethylene) and acetal. As well as silicone and in fluoropolymers such as PTFE, FEP, PFA, ETFE.

Is there a time limit for bonding parts treated with POP?

When bonding most substrates to cyanoacrylate adhesive, you will have up to 2 hours after applying the Permabond POP treatment. If bonding PTFE, the parts need to be applied immediately after the POP has dried.

Are there any substrates that are unsuitable for POP?

DAP and polyamide and ABS substrates.
