Silicone Adhesives & Sealants: FAQs

Silicone adhesives & sealants play a significant role in industrial manufacturing, maintenance and repairs.

The annual global silicone adhesives & sealants market is expected to reach a value of £10 billion by 2032, growing at a rate of 6.5%. This growth is accounted for by increasing demand for UV-stable, thermally endurant household appliances.

As a result, silicone adhesives & sealants have gained a permanent place in the toolkit of manufacturers and maintenance operators across every industry.

Here we answer the most requested silicone adhesives & sealants FAQs.

What are the advantages of adhesives & sealants?

Silicone adhesives & sealants, as provided by our silicone brand DOWSIL, provide various unique advantages, including:

  • Wide temperature range: allowing use across -65ºC to 232ºC (when fully cured).
  • Non-toxic: safe for contact with food, use by children, and everyday applications.
  • Weather-resistant: providing protection from rain, sleet, snow, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and ozone.
  • Good bond strength: providing reliable bonds to a variety of substrates.
  • Low flammability: low fire risks; fully flame-retardant solutions are also available.
  • Good dielectric properties: able to dissipate or store electrical energy across a wide temperature range.
  • Good chemical stability: preventing early breakdowns and ensuring bond reliability.
  • High flexibility: ideal for use across diverse and complex substrates.
  • Stress relieving: absorbing stresses and protecting components.
  • Fast curing: enabling quick applications with the potential for automated dispensing.
  • Electromagnetic protection: avoiding electromagnetic interference.
  • Environmental sustainability: eco-friendly solutions, following the Responsible Care® Pollution Prevention Code framework.

Where can silicone adhesives & sealants be used?

Silicone adhesives & sealants can be used across many industries involving:

  • Bonding of different substrates
  • Sealing materials against external hazards
  • Electronic protection
  • Thermal protection
  • Potting and encapsulation

What are common applications of silicone adhesives & sealants?

Common applications where silicone adhesives & sealants play a role include:

  • Industrial ovens
  • Lighting
  • Electronics
  • Windows
  • HVAC
  • Pipes
  • Vents
  • Refrigerators
  • Display cases
  • Vehicle interiors and exteriors

What are the different types of silicone adhesives & sealants?

Silicone adhesives & sealants typically come in the following types:

  • Adhesives: used for bonding materials together.
  • Sealants: used for sealing materials against external hazards.
  • Encapsulants/gels: used for potting and encapsulation.
  • Conformal coatings: used to protect from abrasion.
  • Foams: used for assembling and sealing components.

How do I choose a silicone adhesive or sealant for my application?

Important factors to consider when choosing silicone adhesives & sealants are:

  • Substrate material: porous vs non-porous.
  • Type of curing required: heat, room temperature, pressure.
  • Hardness/modulus required: hard vs soft coatings.
  • Bond strength required: certain silicone adhesives provide higher bond strength than others.
  • Other required properties: flammability, di-electric, temperature range, and weathering resistance.

As a general rule, the advantages of silicone adhesives and sealants will be maximised when these specifications match as closely as possible to that of the application.

However, it’s important to discuss your application with an expert before choosing a silicone adhesive or sealant.

Do silicone adhesives & sealants require surface preparation before application?

It is generally recommended that substrate surfaces are cleaned and prepared for bonding or sealing before applying a silicone adhesive or sealant.

Porous surfaces may be lightly abraded, ensuring a uniform bonding substrate.

Non-porous surfaces, such as metals, glass and plastics, can be cleaned using a low-lint wipe.

Can paint be applied onto silicone adhesives & sealants?

Generally, silicone adhesives or sealants will not allow for paint to adhere to them.

However, they can come in different colours, allowing use in applications requiring different colours, such as seals that are visible on the final product.

Are primers required for bonding with silicone adhesives & sealants?

Many silicone adhesives can be applied without the use of primers.

Primers, however, can be used with silicone adhesives to bond especially difficult-to-bond materials. Primers can increase the quality and speed of adhesion of room-temperature vulcanising silicone sealants to a variety of common non-porous substrates.

As a general adhesive and sealant rule, we always recommend proper surface cleaning and preparation prior to applying an adhesive or sealant. Properly cleaning and preparing your surface allows for surface contaminants such as dirt, moisture, grease and more to be removed; causing no issues with the adhesive or sealant adhering to the substrate.
