XIAMETER PMX-200: A Versatile Silicone Fluid for Numerous Industrial Applications

XIAMETER PMX-200 is a colourless, water-clear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer silicone fluid suitable for a wide variety of industrial applications. Available in multiple viscosities ranging from 0.65 centistokes (cSt) to 1,000,000 cSt, the varying thicknesses provide the fluid with unique and wide-ranging properties suitable for innumerable applications. Odourless, tasteless, and non-toxic with high spreadability, low surface energy, good heat stability, excellent water resistance, and compatibility with various materials, PMX-200 is commonly used for lubrication, electrical insulation, dampening, and within personal care, furniture, metal, and automotive applications. 

General Properties of Polydimethylsiloxane Fluid:

Some of the general properties of PDMS fluids, include:

  • A crystal clear fluid with a density less than water (0.75 – 0.96g/cm3)
  • Colourless, tasteless, and non-toxic
  • Essentially inert with low reactivity
  • Fungi and bacteria resistance

Personal Care Products

PMX-200 is used as a lubricant and emollient in skin care products such as creams and lotions, providing a smooth feel and reducing greasiness, whilst its water-resistant properties can help improve the formulation of sunscreens. In haircare, PMX-200 is frequently found in conditioners and styling products, helping to improve manageability, and add shine, whilst reducing frizz. PMX-200 is typically used in personal care products at an extremely low to low viscosity (cSt). 

Industrial Applications

As a lubricant, PMX-200’s low friction properties make it suitable for elastomer and plastic lubrication applications such as precision instruments and mechanisms that require non-reactive lubrication. The fluid’s high dielectric strength sees it used for its electrical insulation properties and it proves extremely useful at providing insulation for transformers and other electrical components. Where foam control is needed, PMX-200 can act as a defoamer or anti-foaming agent, whilst the fluid’s non-stick properties make it an excellent mould release agent for easy removal of cast parts. And, the product’s aforementioned water resistance makes it effective for surface treatments such as waterproofing applications or to impart water resistance to textiles.

Specialty Uses

PMX-200 proves effective in the automotive industry, being used as a primary component within car waxes, polishes, and interior protectants for improved shine, water repellency, and UV protection. In leather care applications, PMX-200 is popular within the leather finishing and fatliquoring process, helping to provide suppleness and water resistance to the material. And, in various speciality chemical applications from aerosol starches to fabric conditioners, PMX-200 is chosen to impart a smooth feel.

The specific viscosity of XIAMETER PMX-200 chosen depends on the desired application. Lower viscosities provide better spreadability and are suitable for thin films or lubricants, while higher viscosities offer more damping and film thickness. 

PMX-200 Viscosity Range:

Ultra Low Viscosity – Typically 0.65 – 2 cSt

At ultra low viscosities, XIAMETER PMX-200 is a thin, free-flowing fluid with a non-greasy feel and good volatility and solubility. At this viscosity, PMX-200 is suitable for applications where easy application and even distribution are important, i.e.;

  • Personal care products
  • Lens coatings
  • Cleaning products
  • Mechanical fluids

  • Electrically insulating fluid
  • Cooling fluid

Low Viscosity – Typically 5 – 20 cSt

In low viscosities, XIAMETER PMX-200 is easy to apply, spread, and rub out. At viscosities such as these, it provides a thin, low-friction film, best suited for;

  • Lubrication
  • Lens coatings
  • Cleaning products
  • Polish ingredients

Intermediate Viscosity – Typically 50 – 1,000 cSt

At these viscosities, PMX-200 offers a balance between spreadability and film thickness whilst providing some dampening properties. At these viscosities, PMX-200 is best suited for;

  • Cosmetic ingredient
  • Furniture polish
  • Automotive polish
  • Paste, emulsion, and solvent-based polishes and aerosols
  • Lubricant for plastics and elastomers
  • Mechanical fluid
  • Foam prevention
  • Mould release agent

High Viscosity – Typically 5,000 – 60,000 cSt

At higher viscosities, XIAMETER PMX-200’s thick consistency offers high damping properties whilst forming a thicker protective film, perfect for;

  • Industrial applications
  • An active ingredient in paste, emulsion, or spray polishes for automotive, furniture, and metal applications
  • Damping fluid
  • Plastics additive
  • Mould release agent
  • High-gloss polishes and coatings
  • Certain fabric coatings

Ultra High Viscosity – Typically 100,000 – 1,000,000 cSt

At ultra high viscosities, XIAMETER PMX-200 is characterised by extremely high damping action making the material highly resistant to movement or vibration for applications such as;

  • Damping
  • Foam control in oil production
  • Some cosmetic and personal care applications including as a conditioning agent in hair care products
